RECOMMENDED BOOKS ON HIRING & INTERVIEWING

The following books are ones that we have personally read and recommend as a way of advancing your understanding of hiring, interviewing and talent in general.

Work Rules!: Google's best selling book authored by their head of HR talks about the unique and innovative ways that Google manages their workforce, hires brilliant employees and other fascinating and counterintuitive people strategies.

Topgrading: A long time best seller, Topgrading provides a unique approach to hiring and interviewing that expands on the use of competency-based interviewing and focuses on an intense job history interview.

It's Not the How or the What but the Who: Don't let the confusing title fool you. This book is excellent and the most up-to-date book on our list. Widely regarded as one of the most influential executive recruiters in the world, Claudio Fernández-Aráoz takes readers through a very simple way of identifying top talent for any role. He specifically focuses on the concept of identifying "Potential", which is critical for employers who are increasingly hiring younger workers and other employees who might not have relevant industry experience.

The Talent Equation: The Talent Equation is a data driven look at the labor market from someone who has access to a TON of employment data -- the CEO of Careerbuilder.

Hire with your Head: Similar to the book Topgrading, "Hire with your Head" takes a unique approach to traditional behavioral-based interviews by offering up the concept of "Performance-based Interviewing". The author also covers adjacent topics such as where to source the best candidates.

What Every Body is Saying: The ability to read body language is an advanced skill for interviewers (and interrogators). This book is one of the best we've ever read on the topic and we recommend it for anyone who wants to take their intuition to the next level.

Hiring For Attitude: Accomplished author and speaker Mark Murphy provides a thesis (backed by research) for why companies should focus on hiring people against competencies that have more to do with "Attitude" than "Skills".

Grit: One of the most popular competencies used today is something called "Grit". This book combines decades of research into what Grit is and how you identify it in others. If you're looking for the next generation of talent...this book will help you identify them.
